More Engagement Photos and A Wedding Update

Today I’m sharing a few more photos from our engagement shoot
along with some thoughts/updates on my wedding. I’m getting real with ya’ll
today, so get ready. You’ll also notice a few extra non-engagement photos you
haven’t seen yet….

(By the way, I am NOT flipping the bird in any of these pictures. This reflects my failed attempt at throwing up the ‘Westssiiiiiddde’ Sign. I’m ridiculous, I know.)
So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately, thinking about my wedding planning process, all the ends that must be tied, trying to balance my business and heck—even my personal life. With the stress of it all, I won’t lie: it’s easy to find myself getting caught up in the hoopla; as if my wedding was a production by Devon Rachel. EEEEERRRRR *loud buzzer sound*! I know I’m not the only one who thinks this at one point—at least I hope I’m not.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely cannot wait to marry Chandler and when it comes down to it, I know our union is the only thing that really matters. These are the moments we’re supposed to enjoy and remember for the rest of our lives. I wanted to share how I’m learning to let go a little bit. Hopefully I’ll help other brides realize what I have.
I’m no expert, but I do know that our minds can be the death of us. We criticize every little detail of the wedding until it is, without a doubt, undeniably perfect. It’s all about the looks. Why do we care? Because we’re Brides and we’re human. I don’t want you to think it’s not okay to care. But when you’re getting caught up in the hoopla like I mentioned earlier, take a step back and look at yourself from the outside. Do you like that person? Is that person positive? They should be. At least most of the time.
Reasons why we should be positive? I’ll give you one: that person who wants to marry us. That person is our person. The one we’re going to spend the rest of our lives with. It’s our best friend, the person we can completely be ourselves around. That, my friends, is what the wedding is all about. Once I step back and think about the true reason I’m planning for my big day, it completely takes me to a different place. An emotional, personal place that instantly cures my ‘Bridal Blues’, if you will.
Have you ever felt this way? How did you overcome the feelings?

  1. after attending SEVEN weddings this summer, i was actually shocked to see how much time, money, & stress goes into planning the perfect wedding. to be honest, i don't remember what the flowers looked like, or the bride's hair, or if the food was cooked perfectly.. what mattered most was how much FUN i had. including dancing, music, & interaction. the weddings where conversation was forced (for good reason, the music never stopped, & by the end of the night you had no voice.. those are the weddings i remember. it made me realize that i want a small wedding under a tree complete with a food truck & picnic benches – with simplistic decorations & a huge dance flower & a killer live band that keeps the crowd amped up the entire time. that's what people remember.. so, worry about what matters! forget the small stuff.

    you're pretty!

  2. I got married this past May and this same thing happened to me. I was designing and hand-making my dress and planning my entire wedding because that is the career I want to go into and it became so much about my reception and dress that my fiance would kindly remind me that HE was what was important! I definitely wrote a long blog post about it… And tried to get my head on straight. Truly when the day came all that I cared about at all was that I was marrying my best friend! You are so sweet Devon and your wedding will be wonderful.

  3. Amen, sister. Just got married in October and I FEEL you. It's easy for people to tell you not to stress, but seriously don't get caught up in the "my wedding has to be perfect" BS. It just needs to what you both want it to be. Have fun b/c in the end, none of it really matters. Only thing that matters is that you are both happy.

  4. All I can say is that I'm so happy that my hubs and I got married well before Pinterest was around! I remember having a panic attack over creating table menus and my hubs calmly sat me down and said, "people don't need menus. they know what they're eating. you're a tree hugger and hate wasting paper, so why are you doing this?" It was wonderful because I got caught up in the wedding monster and he pulled me out of it.

Our wedding didn't end up on the pages of Style Me Pretty or any other publication, but we've been blissfully married for over six years and I'd take that any day of the week over having a Pinterest worthy wedding. People do remember that our wedding had the best crab cakes of all time and when you get married in Maryland that's a big deal!
