My Journey To Becoming A Morning Person

Ohhh the morning snooze button. It tends to be my best friend. Yep. I’ll admit it! Over the past 5-10 years I have discovered that I am NOT a morning person. I tend to be almost ‘bear-like’ (believe it or not) in the mornings. It’s terrible! One of my goals this year has been to take steps to become more of a morning person. My Husband is a legit morning person. It’s almost sickening how little sleep he requires and it’s even crazier how happy and bouncy he is with those 4-6 hours of sleep! It’s so hard for me to turn that frown upside down in the mornings — so I’m putting an end to it now and have been researching tips for a better, happier morning. Today I’ll share some of the interesting tips I’ve found!

#1. Set intentions before bed! It is amazing how much better I already feel when I plan everything (and I mean EVERYTHING – even my clothes) the night before. I keep a little journal by my bed for the ideas that always pop in my head at night, and I’ve started to use it for simple planning before bed, too.

#2. Drink a full glass of water right when you wake up. I recently read that drinking a full glass of water as soon as you wake up is great for refueling the body. And if you think about it, that totally makes sense. We are sleeping and most likely dehydrated when we wake up. Our bodies need water! I know I need to make a habit of this. More water is never a bad thing, obviously.

#3. Working out later in the evening to tire me out! Some people (like my Husband) believe in working out first thing in the morning. I really should switch to this routine, but as you can see, I’m trying to just be happy in the mornings here — baby steps , ya’ll! For me, I love working out at night because it completes my day and it helps me to sleep more sound. It tires me out!

#4. Try to create a regular sleep schedule. Obviously it makes tons of sense to create a regular sleep schedule for a happier morning. This is so much easier said than done in my life! But you guys, it can be done. And I am going to master this! Let me know

#5. Cutting down on caffeine to sleep better. If you read my blog regularly, you’d know that I am constantly in a battle of stopping my addiction to Diet Coke and caffeine. Some months are better than others! I know that if I were to cut out the diet cokes, it would lead to a better sleep and thus turn into a better morning. Hey, at least I know what I need to do! I also know that a fresh diet coke first thing in the morning makes my heart sing. Ha! True story: my Husband woke me up on my birthday this year with crack of the diet coke open and wafting the smell of biscuits and gravy.

#6. Shutting off all technology 1 hour before bed  (IE, cell phone & TV with sleep timer) I have decided to either place my phone on my dresser to charge at night or in the bathroom. This one will be the most difficult for me, hands down. I’ve always been someone who uses the heck out of the sleep timer on my TV at night. I LOVE falling asleep with the TV volume really low where the light can soothe me. It’s so weird!

Are you a morning person? I would love your tips! I will master this y’all!

  1. Exercising at night too can add to restless sleep I've read. I know it's impossible and I much prefer to work out after work around 6, because I wake up early enough as it is and I'm not about to wake up at 3 am to go work out. As much as I love working out. I try to be done no later than 8 at the gym to give your body plenty of time to come down and get your heart rate down. I go through periods of insomnia.

Taking hot baths at night are good too. Warming your body temperature up then by getting out and cooling down will relax your body.

Lastly, switch out that soda for hot tea or water girl! Aside from the caffeine factor its all bad for your body in general. I am a self proclaimed caffeine junky. I never thought I would be this person but I live for coffee. I take a shot of espresso before my work outs in place of a supplemented pre-work out. The less sugar the better in the long run! You'll feel like crap at first, but I drink 60+ ounces of water a day and that keeps everything pretty flushed.

    Good luck, sister!

    1. Thank you SO much for this! I love hearing others tips and I'm definitely trying to drink more water, too. I'm sorry you have insomnia! I will absolutely use your tips πŸ™‚

    3. These seem to work for me at least! I just know my body goes through phases but a lot, majority really, has to do with work and stress and diet. Its just so hard to find a good balance to maintain. Good luck! Let us know what works!

  2. Haha, I am totally a morning person. I always try to plan my outfit before bed to make everything much easier in the mornings. But I do have to say, not using any kind of technology before bed totally helps with falling asleep and getting the nice relaxation you deserve!

  3. I'm so not a morning person either but it's true that having a set schedule makes everything so much easier. They always say that you can't "catch up on your sleep" on days when you don't have to get up and it's true- the longer I stay in bed, the more I want to sleep!!

    Love these tips!
