How To: Messy Fishtail Braided Crown

Now I’m no hairstylist pro like Amber Fillerup or anything, but I do love trying new hair styles when I have the time (I’m going to do it more often, I promise). A few weeks ago I traveled to Vegas with Garnier to cover the iHeartRadio Festival – there I was braided up + beautified and I left the weekend inspired to recreate the fun looks by Tommy Buckett. So I set out to attempt what I’ll call the Messy Fishtail Braided Crown and you guys… it’s not as hard as it looks.

Here’s what you’ll need. In addition to this, I curled and crimped my hair with a straightener – old school style. It’ll never go out!
1. Texturize your hair with a dry shampoo or spray like Garnier Texture Tease. Then either wrap 2 inch sections around a curling iron barrel or go old school and crimp/curl with a straightener. This will give your hair just enough umph to rock that just out of bed look (add braids to the just out of bed look and WOW you just slayed the show).
2. Find your middle part and separate 3 small sections on each side to fishtail braid. If you don’t know how to do a fishtail braid, you really should try here. I feel like the fishtail braid is one of those styles people think they can’t create but really absolutely can. And really, really well. It’s so easy, ya’ll! These little braids just take a bit because they are so small. But literally all you do is make 3 on each side and secure with clear elastics. See more photos below:

3. Once you create 3 small fishtail braids on each side (leaving face framing layers in the front if desired), loosen them out by pulling apart the loops. (see below)

4. I always start out with spraying a dry shampoo or texturizer like this fabulous Garnier option. I like this product because it’s not too sticky or thick. It’s really light and gives just enough texture without feeling all product-y if you know what I mean. Go ahead and add more texture spray at this point. You’ll need it.

Secure the braids with pins. This is the hardest part. It’s tough for me to hide every single pin, so I do the best I can and try to blend the colors properly. Tommy interwove my braids, but that’s not so easy to do on your own – and I’m working on that. Secure one side and then cover with the other. Go one braid at a time and get creative with the placement! I think I hid enough pins to go out in public. πŸ™‚

Big thanks to Garnier for sending me to Vegas! And to Tommy Buckett for inspiring this look and creating the one below. I’ll be working on updates of this!
