Q&A With My Hair Stylist: Tips For Your Best Hair Yet

July 11, 2016

Living in Los Angeles obviously has it's many perks. One of my favorites by far is the access to amazing hair stylists and makeup artists. Over the past 3 years, I've had the privilege of going to Nine Zero One Salon and have watched the salon and my extremely talented hair stylist Molly Haugh blow up on social media + grow into a mega beauty business. It's pretty cool to see the power of hustle, talent and social media come together for people.

With that said, you guys sent me any hair questions to ask Molly a while back for Snapchat and I thought I would share that with you today. The tips are really helpful and I think you will definitely learn something new!

Q: Nine Zero One is the salon for wavy boho blonde beauties (a celeb favorite) in LA. What are your tips for getting the best wavy style?

A: Using a 1 1/4 inch iron, curl away from your face until you get to your ear, then rotate curling back and forth. Let everything set before using your hands to re-shape and tossle the curls. Also, keep the ends straight.

Q: Best color shampoo/treatment for blondes:

A: Evo Fabuloso Blonde Treatment. Wash your hair normally with shampoo, then add this treatment before conditioner. It keeps your color nice and bright, not brassy, which is a big thing for us blondes.

Q: What is your coloring process for me? Highlights, lowlights or both?

A: We highlight every session and add lowlights every 3rd visit.

Q: What are your top 5 favorite hair products? (Click the (+) to be linked to each product)

Q: Best summer hair tips?

After washing, work argon oil through damp hair and let air dry. Once dry, add a good texturizing spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for a perfect easy summer look.

Q:How do I prevent hair tangling overnight and looking like a lion in the AM?

Tie your hair into a low braid and sleep with a silk pillowcase. This will keep hair together without the damaging effects of wearing your hair up while you sleep. I have personally implemented this tip over the past 3-4 months and have seen a huge difference. I look a lot less like Mufasa in the mornings!

And the final tip that I am personally trying out at the moment:

Stop washing your hair so much.

Wash your hair once a week, twice at most. I'm not going to lie - when I went to get my hair colored a few weeks ago they told me to stop washing my hair so much. It's true, I had started working out regularly again and I sweat like a man so naturally I washed my hair after each workout. Big mistake as a blonde. My hair was brassy AF. They told me I had to cut down my washing, which my hair can definitely take naturally sans the increase in sweat. Your hair will feel really gross at first, but it will eventually get used to it and adapt. Here are a few tips to help:

  • Tie your hair up in a tight low bun while working out. This will prevent the drenched pony as much as possible.
  • If you have to, just rinse with water and add conditioner to the ends.
  • Find a good dry shampoo to regularly use - I'm still working on this. I cannot find one I love - do you guys have any recommendations?
I hope you enjoyed this post! Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions in the comments below :)

  1. I used living proof for a while--loved the results, hated the smell. Now I use Elizabeth and James Nirvana dry shampoo and I'm obsessed!

  2. I also have the brassy problem but I feel so gross not washing my hair everyday. Granted, since I coloured it, it handles 2-day hair a lot better but more than that and it's really gross lmao.

  3. Devon, I really like using Oscar Blandi for my dry shampoo, but I like using it best as a texturizer when I give my hair waves after a wash. It smells great, isn't gritty and does absorb oil. Would love to hear what you come up with! X Rachel

  4. Such lovely hair!

  5. I have enjoyed this blog, your Living With Less blog and now I'm sure I'll enjoy your new blog. Thanks for sharing with us!
