How To Sleep Better

Over the past year and a half or so, I have made a conscious effort to change my sleeping habits. The crazy devil woman I started to turn into in the mornings just had to be stopped. That stops being cute after age 10, right?
Well, today I want to share 4 big lessons I’ve learned in the process and tips to getting a better night’s rest.

1. Stick to a sleeping schedule as much as possible. I know at times it can be difficult with a crazy work or family life, but it’s really important to stick to a schedule where you get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. I can speak to this- I have seen a crazy improvement in how I feel mentally and physically after changing my 6 hour a night habit to at least 7. It can be hard to tackle for some of us, but if you stick with it, you will start to see the changes and become motivated. My husband will tell you the best part – I’m sooo much nicer in the mornings! He’s right, I really am. I never thought I would say this, but we typically get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Once you get into the schedule, it’s hard to deviate from it! All in moderation, right?
I read a really interesting article on sleep habits of successful people you should check out here.

2. Grab a book instead of your phone or TV. They say books are the best sleeping pill and ‘they’ are right. I’m not going to lie – I frequently hit the sheets and can’t keep my eyes open a second to look at a word. But if you are slightly awake and want to wind down, grab a book instead of the remote or phone. Exercise your mind a bit!

3.  Try a humidifier. The health benefits on this one are extensive! Adding a humidifier will improve your skin, dry nose and throat (AHEM, SNORING!), decreases bacteria in the air that could make you sick and much much more. I recently purchased a humidifier and I’m excited to see what happens to my skin and dry nose. I’m so sick of the dry nose overload lately! If you have any tips or experiences with humidifiers, leave them below and I’ll keep everyone updated on my results.

4. Make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. Sheets + bedding matter! I’m personally a thread count snob, but it doesn’t have to be all about the highest thread count – find a set that feel nice on your skin. When it comes to blankets and duvets, be sure to select the right warmth level – no one likes to wake up feeling like you just ran a mile. I sleep terribly when I’m too hot or cold! Test out different blanket combos to achieve the right temperature. In my opinion, it’s best to spend a little more to have as much comfort as possible. If it means splurging a bit on the comfortable pillow, do it. The better you sleep, the better you perform, so it’s all a big cycle. Mine are from Parachute and I could not be more in love!
How are your sleeping habits? Are you ready to make the change or have you tackled it? I want to hear about it below! 🙂

  1. For me, I know I need a nice buffer zone when I'm heading to bed because I'm always up for a while. I like to listen to relaxing videos like ASMR (not the weird ones!) and take care to also wind down by watching some shows or a movie BEFORE my heading to bed time 🙂
