Interior Design Lessons Learned

I am so happy to say that our living room has become one of my favorite places to be. But it wasn’t always! I feel like even the minor adjustments and furniture design plan for this house have been such a learning process – something I definitely plan to share more of with you guys. I can’t even imagine the things we’ll learn when we start to get more specific with remodeling and building homes in the future!  If I can say one thing about the process, I’d say it takes time to tweak things to be exactly how you pictured (or better).

I still have things to tweak before this room 100% good to go – new pillows, art, lamps, accessories + plants to come- stay tuned soon for the big reveal.

Personally, I now prefer gathering special items that mean something to me instead of simply purchasing accessories from the average places (although they are great in moderation!) everyone goes. So when you are in the process of decorating a space and feel like it’s taking forever to find the right vintage chair or table or book or vase, just know that it all takes time and in the end, it’s better to have THE item you really wanted rather than settling for whatever you can pick up right away. Be patient and that perfect peacock chair will come to you when you least expect it – mine did!

I decided to stick to this plan after moving from our one bedroom apartment to this 3 bedroom home and realizing how much junk + home accessories I’d hoarded over the years. Clutter isn’t cute. Even if what’s being cluttered is. Still working on this but I’ve made massive steps.

On a different note, If you regularly read my blog, you’d know that I’m a HUGE fan of layering. Every year you hear me gush about Fall for a lot of reasons, but mainly because it’s prime time for the layers. And I’m more excited than usual this season because I’m seeing a ton of new and exciting ways to experiment with them. One of my favorite newer layering techniques: a (flouncy) blouse under an A-Line or structured dress (or in my case, denim overall dress). This trend was EVERYWHERE at NYFW and I’m going to be doing tons of variations (some you’ll see next week!) all season. This Madewell denim dress + Forever 21 (YES FOREVER) top make me insanely happy separately, and even HAPPIER together. Isn’t it better when we’re all together? I’m lame.
