Solving Problems

A lot of you agreed on Instagram recently that you, too, figure things out while sitting on the floor. IDK why I run to my guest room floor (pictured here), plop down and stay for a while to sort through my thoughts, but hey, at least I’m doing it! There were a lot of moments like this in 2016, that’s for sure.

The last time I did my floor sitting routine (this past weekend), I solved a problem with vowing to read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Well, friends, I did read the book on Sunday and I am currently knee deep in my own belongings. It has weirdly been therapeutic and, just like Marie says in the book, you kind of rekindle the relationship with items you already own and in my case, may have forgotten about. In short, you are to gather all of one category (if you have a lot of clothes, start with tops, bottoms etc.) on the floor, and I’m talking every single item you own in this category. Then, you handle each piece and ask yourself if it brings you joy or not. If it’s a no, it’s got to go. Man oh man is this process interesting.

I am doing a video on it because I found my process both difficult and ridiculously liberating all at the same time. I went from tops to bottoms, then to dresses and coats/suits and it took a long, long time. Part because I tried to talk myself into keeping certain things while the little Marie angel on one shoulder said, “remember the rules? Thank the item for what it gave you and let someone else experience it”. The devil on the other shoulder (me) was all, “girl, this would look SO cute with that one top, you could totally wear it for that occasion”. This is why we start with clothes. Yeah, I’m not only going through my clothes, but literally every possession I own, from eyeshadow to panties, and cups to books/papers. This is a huge overhaul.

One of Marie’s other big rules of the book is that it all should be done in one sitting  because otherwise we generally do not finish. This has been really hard for me to do because I half-way started Sunday, vowed to take a day Monday to finish but needed to step away several times for work. I am happy to report that as of Wednesday at 7AM I am nearing the end, kind of. I plan to finish everything today, and share my experiences this week or next. Trust me, you want to hear how much it’s changed things.

Have you read her book and/or attempted the big purge? I’m dying to know how it helped and how long your process took – ha! Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I love that book! It took me a full week to declutter my house but I did the entire thing with the exception of my roommates room. I got rid of 5 garbage bags of clothes and then 14 bags of other things from around my house. The whole house felt lighter and happier when I was done with it. Good luck!!

  2. I was just talking to my husb about how we needed a big purge…I should pick up the book for inspiration to start…but I have to ask what you plan to do with all of your purged clothing? If you sell on Poshmark, I’m so there. I know that wouldn’t help my purge, but I have always loved your style!
